US Men’s National Team Looks Bad in 2-1 Loss

Robbie Findley

Well, it wasn’t all Robbie Findley’s fault, but he failed to impress in today’s match against the Netherlands. Bob Bradley is desperately looking for strikers and Findley had a unique opportunity to impress Bradley and earn a spot on the team heading to South Africa. Sadly, Findley did not help his cause in the 2-1 loss to the Netherlands. He will rejoin Real Salt Lake now and hopefully he will play with nore fire than he did on this occasion.

But Findley wasn’t the only US player that looked lethargic and played uninspired soccer. The whole team looked bad, and I found myself feeling sorry for Tim Howard as he was left exposed repeatedly by his back line. With Dempsey and Davies down with injuries someone needed to step up and frankly, no one on the front line did. The one US score came in the 88th minute when Carlos Bocanegra scored on a header from a free kick. Great job Carlos, but here’s the thing, when your only score comes from a defender on a set play it really stands out when your offense has done so little.

Three minutes into stoppage time Josie Altidore fired off a solid shot but why so late? Why so little offense? What this game says to me is that Bradley has some serious issues to work out in the next two months if he does not want to be embarrassed at the World Cup.

I dont think we plahyed that bad keep in mind we were facing one of the Contenders at this year’s world cup, Look at their overflowing talent, whereas our squad is sorely lacking. We were on the verge of entering halftime at a draw, until Bornstein made that ill advised shirt tug. The teams strengths are definately defensively, It is where we have our most international, and Non domestic league experience. Once Onyewu returns for the WC it will be Spector, Demerit, Onyewu, Bocanegra as our starting four with Bradley at DM, and maybe Edu as well depnding on if we line up in a 451 or a 442.

Cameron, good points. It is true that the team that took the field today is not exactly the one that will take the field in South Africa, and no one will be more pleased than I to see Clint Dempsey back on the field. I think that Bob Bradley is still trying out a few strikers and I didn’t see much in the way of new, exciting players. Brian Ching looked good in Tampa last week, but Bradley didn’t take him along. Findley has the raw speed, and I hope he can make a breakthrough, but I did not see it today. I’m hoping that Findley has the breakthrough as I am a huge RSL fan as well as USMNT fan. Thanks for the comments.
