The surreal RSL story continues
By: Ian Rose | May 3rd, 2007Yes, it is official now. John Ellinger has been fired from the head coaching job of Real Salt Lake and has, as rumored, been replaced by midfielder Jason Kreis, who announced his retirement as a player just as he was announcing the beginning of his coaching career. Huh. As if the Red Bull game this weekend wasn’t enough of a challenge, we have found a way to lose both a coach and a midfielder - not just any midfielder, but the all-time leading scorer in the league and the first player to be signed by the team. There are upsides to this, of course - the players know and respect him … but he has a long way to go to prove to me, and a lot of Real fans, that he wouldn’t be worth more on the pitch than on the sidelines. Either way, he has had a great career as a player - 108 goals, 17 of which came for Real Salt Lake - and some great goals mixed in there. As for his potential as a coach, time will tell, but this game against New York promises to be a very harsh welcome.

Any word on whether they will try to get another midfielder to replace him?

Nothing yet - there’s quite a bit of talent in the midfield even without Kreis, but yeah, we’ll see in the next few days whether someone gets moved up from the reserves or what.

Jason’s retirement should free up some cap money and the secondary transfer window is coming up soon. For now it does leave us with a problem: Andy is hurt, Kenny Cutler, who had a great game agianst the Wizards, was out with an injury as well so it should be interesting to see who steps up. My bet would be if Culter is still hurt we see Duke H. or Lancos fill the vacancy for Sat. I would like us to grab another true attacking midfielder or an international striker (not to replace Jeff, just to help us score).
