So, about this midfield …
By: Fitz | March 17th, 2008I needed all of this past weekend, and much of St. Patrick’s Day, to figure out what opinion to write on RSL’s midfield.
And the best I can do is this:
_______________________________________________________.
Now, some of you might argue that I’ve just written my best post of 2008. You’re welcome.
Truth be told, I’m stumped. I like the depth at center mid, but not the lack of outside mids. I like Dema Kovalenko and Kyle Beckerman in the middle, but is that worth the cost of putting Javi Morales outside? Should we put Dema outside even though we already know that’s not his best position?
Or should RSL use a 4-3-3? Place Beckerman and Dema in front of the backs, use Morales as an attacking mid and have two players from the Findley/Yura/Espindola triumvirate make runs off services to The Doctor. Yes? No?
I’m just throwing some possibilities out there and asking what you think. This way, I can’t be wrong. No concrete suggestion = can’t be wrong. Brilliant, I say.
Floor’s open.

RSL will play a narrow diamond formation with 4 midfielders. Javi Morales will be the one up top, that is a given. Based on comments from the team, Dema will play “out wide” although this team will not have alot of width and will rely on the outside backs to fill in this real estate. I assume that the other wide player will be Cordoba, although this is up in the air. This would leave Beckerman at the back, in essentially a destroyer role. This would be both good and bad. If Cordoba is not in, then Andy Williams could be the other wide player or Talley could slide in the back, and Beckerman would go out wide. To me, this fourth spot (Cordoba, Williams, Talley) will decide how our midfield comes together. The other pieces are essentially set.

realslfan,
Thanks for posting. Do you like Dema where he’s at? Or is it basically the best option considering what we have? Is this system of using the outside backs to fill in the width something you like? Others, feel free.

Well, realslfan has been watching them in practices, but I am unsure about Kovalenko being set as a starter. I think the only near definites are Beckerman and Morales. If Willaims is one of the fittest players on the team (mentioned early in camp), then I could see him playing left CM (but aggressive) and Cordoba playing right CM (less aggressive), and Beckerman back at DMid. Oh well, the best part about this season is there are MANY options.
