Scoreless in Seattle… (I couldn’t resist)
By: Rocky Cole | March 29th, 2009
RSL came into Seattle with eyes wide open after watching the Sounders thump the Red Bulls a week ago, but even with an additional week of prep, it wasn’t enough to beat the Sounders and Real Salt Lake fell 2-0. By my count, the Sounders have now scored 5 goals on MLS teams and have given up… zero. Now I have to make a confession here, as well as being a huge RSL fan – they are my home team – I am a big Fulham fan, and I was not surprised by the defense that Keller was able to mount in the Sounders goal. I watched as RSL put some pretty good shots towards Keller, but he was up to the challenge of every ball, even the ones that were point blank reaction stops. All I can say is that over ten years in the Premiere League was good break in for the MLS…
Real’s coach, Jason Kreis said after the game that he was pleased with the overall play of RSL, but that the team had some work to do. Yes, and I am sure that two things will be on the agenda for this week’s practice back in Utah:
(1) When you make a break on the other teams goal – be defensively prepared for the counter attack. The Sounders proved they can counter with the best; and…
(2) When making a shot on the opposing team’s keeper – especially one as good as Keller – it is better to shoot the ball around or over him, rather that any where he can get a hand, knee, foot, shoulder, or even his face on the ball. Keller has a nasty knack of getting some part of his body in the way whenever the ball comes anywhere near him.
If Real can straighten out those two minor issues, the team will be on its way to living up to its potential this season. Real’s next match will be home this Thursday, 2 April 2009 at 7:00 PM MST against the Columbus Crew. That should be an easy match now that the “rookie” MLS team is out of the way…

“Keller has a nasty knack of getting some part of his body in the way whenever the ball comes anywhere near him.”
And that is why I loved him in Fulham, and will hate him here.
