Salty Taste in da’ Mouth
By: Akeem Samuels | July 16th, 2008
So the 18 man roster for the MLS All-Star team has been completed and what may come to a shock to the Real Salt Lake faithful: NOT A SINGLE REAL PLAYER. While initially not voted in by the fans for the first 11 spots on the team, it was widely expected that of the seven secondary spots that were remaining on the roster that Javier Morales, the RSL standout, could possibly fill one of these spots.
The Argentine who played last for Spanish Segunda División club Salamanca, has scored 3 goals and 7 assists on his way to leading RSL to the number one spot in the Western Conference. Despite his admiral play, New England coach Steve Nicol, head coach for this years All-Star campaign, selected New York’s Juan Pablo Angel, Toronto’s Jim Brennan, Houston’s Pat Onstad and Colorado’s Christian Gomez and Pablo Mastroeni with his five picks to the original 11 who were voted in by the fans last week.
MLS commissioner Don Garber with his two commissioner picks bestowed Galaxy standout Edson Buddle and four time MLS Cup Champion Dwayne DeRosario of the Houston Dynamo the two roster spots to fill out the 18 man MLS Roster.
All-Star Players Selected:
Chicago: 1
Chivas USA: 1
Colorado: 2
Columbus: 2
DC United: 0
FC: Dallas: 1
Houston: 2
Kansas City: 1
Los Angeles: 3
New England: 3
New York: 1
RSL: 0
San Jose: 0
Toronto: 1
Real Salt Lake general manager Garth Lagerwey voiced his dismay saying, “I think he’s been our best player and is richly deserving of it[All-Star Roster Spot]…However, I also would acknowledge Javier hasn’t played a ton of games in our league yet and may not be that well-known yet.”
If there is anything to look positive to, the league is contractually obligated to make a secondary all-star team “List” for the Eastern and Western Conference. Due to the revamp format the league conducts its all-star games, the list is relatively meaningless in terms of actual on-field play. However Javier Morales, and possibly a few more RSL Players can be named to the Western Conference team “list”.
The MLS All-Star game is July 24th, 7pm ET on ESPN HD and Telefutura.

Excellent work Akeem – I was hoping for the RSL page to get moving again.
Javi Morales, Espindola – great players. Shame there are no RSL representatives.

Got to get some DC United players on there also.

My guess is that DC doesn’t mind — more energy for SuperLiga and all those other fun competitions. And San Jose is understandable. But no RSL? Please.

Why do they have this stupid all-star format anyways??? At least play against a better club than West Ham. I suggest a team from La Liga, but thats just me.
