RSL wins opening match of the Carolina Challenge Cup beating DC United 3-0
By: Rocky Cole | March 9th, 2009
Real Salt Lake started the pre-season Carolina Challenge Cup strong, with a 3-0 win over DC United. Luis Escalada, Yura Movsisyan and Andy Williams all scored in the second half of play, while RSL’s defense continued to shine as it has done throughout pre-season. The Carolina Challenge Cup is in its 6th year and has a round-robin format. On Wednesday, 11 March 2009, RSL will face The Charleston Battery of USL Division I, at 5:15 Mountain Time. Charleston lost its opening match to Toronto FC 2-1. RSL will close out the tournament against Toronto FC on Saturday, 14 March 2009, at 3:00 Mountain Time.
As Captain Obvious might say: Pre-season is called pre-season for a reason, and Jason Kreis is making the most out of getting looks at new players and strategies on the field. Every season, building an effective team is like fitting the pieces of a puzzle together – a hard puzzle with lots of tiny pieces that might look like they fit, but have to be in the exact place to bring the intended image into focus. Not restricted in substitutions in pre-season is a good thing, and at the 70th minute, Coach Kreis brought Clint Mathis, Andy Williams, Robbie Findley, Nat Borchers and Ned Grabavoy, recently signed from the San Jose Earthquakes, into the game.
Yes it’s still pre- season, and of course DC United was probably taking a look at players and strategies just like Coach Kreis, but RSL has been on a pretty good roll, one that started at the end of the 2008 season and carried the team into the playoffs for the first time. All Captain Obvious can say about RSL’s continued solid play is: Ride the wave boys, as long as there is a wave to ride!

Kenny got married over the summer and he now plays for a scottish team, Hamilton Accies. I think him leaving was a mutual agreement between the clubs.
