RSL Strikes First But Falls to Swedish BK Hacken Late in Match
By: Rocky Cole | March 3rd, 2009Real Salt Lake struck first in a hard-fought match against Swedish first division team BK Hacken, but ultimately fell when BK Hacken scored two goals late in the game. RSL looked to have the game won and keep the team’s outstanding pre-season run going – having scored fifteen goals while giving up zero goals – when BK Hacken scored in rapid succession at the 82nd and 86th minutes. Nonetheless, RSL performed well, with solid play from Ian Joy, Kyle Beckerman and Clint Mathis who sent the ball over BK Hacken’s defenders allowing Yura Movsisyan to score just ten minutes into the game.
Pre-season is a time for players and coaches to acclimate to each other and to get a feel for the level of play that will be crucial from day one of the regular season. That being the case, Jason Kreis and his cadre of RSL coaches for are likely well pleased with what they have seen from RSL in pre-season so far. Sure, RSL’s impressive defensive mark was broken at 442 minutes by BK Hacken, but Hacken is a top-flight club with a storied history dating back to its formation in 1940. RSL competed well in the match with Hacken and seems to be carrying its 2008 end of season form on into 2009. RSL’s preparation for the 2009 season will continue on the 4th of March when the team heads to Charleston, South Carolina for it’s final pre-season trip where it will play matches against Charleston, DC United and Toronto FC, in the Charleston Challenge Cup.
