RSL Still Quiet About Argentines….And Other Stuff.

By: Wiz | August 14th, 2007

The deadline to sign the one, two or three of the Argentines on trial here in Salt Lake is approaching. What will be the result? Word from the organization is that they all are skilled and have impressed with their desire to be here. I think that is great but will they make a difference? In general, I think bringing in talent from Argentina and Brazil as well as other South American countries is helpful, especially if they come with a strong resume. It seems that our neighbors to the South as well as the continent of Africa will be the MLS’ recruiting grounds. Not like that is news but with the success of some of the recent players from South American (lets include Mexico and Central America in this as well for the sake of argument) countries in the league and the limited resources of MLS franchises it seems like the move to sign the Latin player is a lot easier on the pocket book as well as the cultral assimilation of the player.

Freddy Adu might get some time tonight with his new club Benfica. Does that intrest anyone? Good luck Freddy. Thanks for all the…uhh…Audi commercials.

The EPL is officially underway. The TV contract this league has is just incredible. Which league do you follow the most? Which style of play do you see the MLS taking up? Will it have more of the Latin flair with short passes, building through the midfield or do you think it will adopt the frenetic direct pace and attack of the Northern European clubs?

obviously i follow the argentine league a lot. i’m also a big man u fan. i really hope that the mls can come up with their own style. i do see the juga bonita gaining popularity among americans since the european style is seen as boring to most that don’t watch soccer.

    boca juniors,
I agree that the joga bonita is gaining more afficionados in the US. I think Man Utd. play different than most of their English competitors. They pass better and control possesion more than most in the EPL. It looks like the national police are getting invovlved in some fan violence taking place in the Argentina league. I remember once being asked which team I supported while visiting Bariloche, Argentina…River or Boca? The whole country takes soccer/futbol very seriously. Fun to watch though.

Do we know anything else about these Argentinians and their resume? Unfortunately a lot of guys are talented and while RSL needs all the talent it can get, they are in desperate need of an instant impact player. I don’t follow the argentine league that much but are any of these guys stars down there? I agree that it is a nice idea to target latin players because of the pull that American lifestyle has but I think that RSL specifically has plenty of “project players” and needs some more impact players. Any word on Jay Jay?

    Chowda,
I cannot agree more with the need for an impact player. I hear that we have “some” money for a DP but they are looking for the right fit. That seems to be the party line though. No one wants to throw money at someone who is just going to take this as a retirement post. To be honest, I don’t see how we can compete salary wise for anyone with the big name that would bring the team around now. I still have hopes of seeing Riquelme (I didn’t see if he was on Boca’s roster or not)come to SLC. As for the other guys (the three amigos);their agent contacted RSL then Jason went down to see them. Right now the only one that has some 1st division time is the defender. One was on loan to some club in Spain as I was informed. Jay Jay…well, who knows. That seems to have turned into a bidding war.
