RSL Falls to New England 2-1. We Say GoodBye to Freddy Adu and Danny Torres.

By: Wiz | July 30th, 2007

There could be a lot said on the officiating of the match on Saturday but I am going to leave that alone. I will stay positive on this one…I know, that is all we have to hold onto these days, hope and a positive attitude. However, I saw a lot of positive points during the match. Chowda mentioned Kipre being a favorite and I think Kipre had a great game. I would like to see him let a shot go however when he gets to that 18 yrd corner with no one on him. He also had some great 1 v. 1 moves but over did it a couple of times and ended up losing the ball. He is a solid defender and I think could turn into a real offensive threat with his solid crosses and if he started to shoot when open. Wingert and Sturgis impressed me. I thought they both had solid games…very happy with their performances. Which leaves us with why Danny Torres has been released from the team. Wingert showed he can mark, tackle and attack from the back so Danny is left without a job. Jack Stewart will probably be next. He is getting some slack right now due to an injury he has been nursing but I think his days are numbered at RSL. We say goodbye to Freddy Adu as he leaves for Benfica in Portugal. This is a great move for RSL and Freddy. This opens some salary cap space and he won’t take that DP spot next year. There is a lot to say and comment on. I will just open it up to you guys and let you have at it. I will be gone for a few days but leave a post and have some fun thinking of the possibilities. Chowda, I agree with you on the winger aspect.

Boca, the word is that some time this week three Argentines will join RSL on trial. Edgar Espindola (forward), Javier Morales (midfielder), and Matias Mantilla (defender) are the newest trialists according to the Salt Lake Tribune and that is probably not a good sign for two other guys who have been here on trial for a couple of weeks, Tony Vairelles of France and Uche Chinyere of Nigeria.

I don’t know much about any of these guys and while that may not necessarily be a bad thing (I don’t follow South American soccer much), I think that we need to sign a big name player to make a splash on and off the field. I think it needs to be either an attacking mid or a great winger. I can’t say that I have any great ideas about who but I don’t think we need another “sleeper” young project player. I truly believe that we have a strong nucleus of talented and athletic young players but we need the star to build around. Demarcus Beasley may be a good fit on the wing if somehow he is not a good fit with Rangers. Maybe Denilson, even though he is older. Just a few thoughts on the DP spot.

Obvious, in Argentina the competitive level is huge, but for your luck the players that you have now in Real Salt Lake are first level, mainly the defender, who in addition , is a very good person,an very appreciated in soccer means. I personally follow the race of this great defender, ever since beginning in Argentinos Juniors, star cradled, and of wich I am fan. I must say also that Javier Morales is a great player too. I hope they can show you their high level. Good luck for you and for this players and sorry for my english.

Thanks for the update on those players. The problem is that I think we really need an impact player in the attacking end the most. Speaking of Argentines, it would be great if we could somehow get Riquelme. He seems to be without a club right now as Villareal doesn’t seem to want him and his loan with Boca is up. I really believe that RSL needs to make a big splash with their Designated Player and that would do the trick.

Really it would be great if you could get Riquelme, but that is something very difficult because he prefers to remain in Argentina he is a player who doesn’t adapt to live abroad. Riquelme is not the only big name of Argentina.
