Real Salt Lake, The Detroit Lions Of The MLS?

By: Wiz | July 9th, 2007

With the Philadelphia Phillies getting set to celebrate their 10,000th loss and with the NFL shaping up for a new season one is left to reflect on the biggest losers of our beloved sports seasons. Who would you say are the teams you can just count on to lose the big game? Or never even get to the big game? Does RSL make the list? With their lousy performance this weekend one could definately make the argument. I mean it has been 3 years and no playoffs! Chivas enjoys winning, Toronto FC came to our stadium and got their first road win. Is it time to just accept the fact that we are the Detroit Lions of MLS? Are you starting to think your money is better spent else where? It looks to me like the losing mentality has become engrained in the franchise. Just look at the lack of discipline against the Crew. Let me know what you think.

Two of the biggest frustrations (other than the obvious one - losing) is… 1) Watching Kreis substitute prior to the 70th minute when he doesn’t “like” what he is seeing. Taking Findley and Adu off the pitch and replacing them with has-been-Brown shows Kreis’ impatience and youthful anxiety. 2) NEVER seeing anyone move forward. Wait, let me back up… Now that Findley has come to play for RSL, I have seen him waiting in the box on occasion. Even once against the Crew, before he was subbed (see # 1), he was awaiting an Esky cross. The problem was that he was alone and a defender got to it first.

More about # 2 - How many times, Wiz, have we seen Adu place the ball perfectly outside the goalie’s reach and have no one there to claim it? How many times has RSL based all their hopes on ONE player in the front? If your only attacking method is to hope that Esky or Findley (or Cunningham when he was here) break-away, then there is a serious problem.

And, I keep hearing complaints around town about Adu’s performance on RSL, but what people don’t seem to understand is that Adu is a playmaker. Sure, he scores too, but look at his U-20 WC action against Brazil, 2 ASSISTS to the only 2 goals. Look at his history with DC. He has always had more assists than goals - that’s his job.

I’ll continue to be a fan. I love RSL (most of ‘em anyway). Sometimes, it’s heartbreaking to watch Kreis try to coach and not give opportunities to those that deserve them.

PS - Where’s our new DP?

    Not Wiz,
Is it any wonder we lose in the 72nd min.? Right after a substitute?! I agree with you there. I know coach is trying to send a message…play for 90 min. plus. But we seem to be reluctant to push lat in the second half to keep the other team’s defence honest. I know Kreis is trying to avoid a counter attack but how about we play possesion soccer and take a chance? It has got to be better than sitting back and letting them shoot at us.
Your comment about no one pushing up to recieve an Adu cross is spot on! Someone just needs to watch any European or South American league to see how that is done! I rarely see anyone attack that far post. That was one of my gripes with Klein. But it seems to be the organization not a player thing. Freddy has proven he can do both, score and assist, if in the right system. So if he has a great U-20 WC what does that say about RSL? For the DP. I hope the lack of an announcement means that the player is still playing in Copa America or is working out the details in Europe. I am starting to get the feeling we are going to be disappointed. WE are dealing with an organization that can’t even coach guys to attack the far post (basic soccer tactic).

I set up a plan with my bank where I’d get a nickel each time Adu crosses it perfectly with no one there to receive the ball. And now, I’m retired!

    Seriously though… FIRE MILLEN!

    Clint,
Millen got the bug. The minute he was hired by the Lions he just went down the crapper like the rest of the franchise. It is endemic there. I feel that is what is happening with RSL. The minute you come to the franchise…you start to go backwards. You can’t control it.

As a Michigander by birth, I feel for the Lions. I’ve watched my parents and my grandparents suffer through their Lions fandom, but I could never really appreciate it. Now, as an RSL fan, I understand it perfectly. Maybe someday we can turn things around, but there’s an awful lot of housecleaning that needs to be done first.

Fire Millen and save the Lions!

Fix the Front Office and save RSL!

    Pate,
I grew up with winning teams. Maybe a down year here or there but usually in the hunt for a championship. But I now know why you see these rabbid supporters for their teams even though they know they’re going to lose…Its the same reason the gambler keeps betting. Sooner or later they will turn around, get a win and you want to be there. To quote Nacho from Nacho Libre, “Don’t you want to taste the glory? To see what it tastes like?” Yes!! I do !! But how long do I have to wait?!

The Detroit Lions had a winning tradition at one time, otherwise they would not have made it out of the 40s. I think that the NFL team the RSL compares best with at this point are the NY Jets, who other than SB III have very little glory.

I think that if the wins do not begin coming, the fans will eventually abandon RSL.

But we have forgotten that expansion teams that succeed early are not the norm. I expect that we will not make the playoffs until the 2010 expansion.

look the coach before kreis sucked, bottom line. now kreis is brand new on the coaching scene and will take some time to figure things out. i live in louisiana and have had to endure a horrible saints franchise which is now good. i feel real will be better but as the saints learned you gotta dish out some money on some players. they are starting to do this, but they need more. if in two years they still suck bad, then they will be the worst team in mls. i’m giving kreis a chance to show himself
