Real Salt Lake faces tougher pre-season opponent in BK Hacken
By: Rocky Cole | February 27th, 200927 February 2009, Real Salt Lake goes into the final game of the team’s pre-season trip to Tampa, Florida with an impressive 14 goals scored and 0 goals given up so far in pre-season. While this is impressive on the surface, and reason to hope that RSL has brought the magic of its 2008 playoff run into the new season, the teams faced so far in pre-season have not been at the level of RSL or the MLS teams RSL battled in the 2008 MLS playoffs. Tonight, though, RSL will face BK Hacken of Sweden, a team that played to a 1 – 1 draw against FC Dallas just six days ago. Clearly, BK Hacken may present more of a challenge for RSL than their previous pre-season opponents. BK Hacken, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, is a team on the rise, promoted in 2008 to the Allsvenskan, the top level of the Swedish football league. Of course, RSL is also a team on the rise and seems to be firing on all cylinders so far in 2009. My guess is that Coach Jason Kreis will be looking for a strong performance from his team both defensively and offensively in the game against BK Hacken. Anything less than a serious effort by RSL against a team like BK Hacken could lead to RSL getting burned in the Florida sunshine.

Personnel moves are still up in the air with pre-season going. The new smaller rosters are going to cause a lot of MLS teams to be strategic in their personnel moves. I will see what I can find out about the specific moves that “bocasaints” mentions. My guess is that with the team’s roster having to shrink because of the new guidelines, some tough choices had to be made, especially on midfielders. RSL is likely not done with personnel shifts – some decisions will probably come after the last pre-season trip to Charleston.
