Preview: Real Salt Lake v. FC Dallas
By: Ian Rose | April 6th, 2007It’s here. It’s finally here. Real’s season begins on Saturday at 4pm Mountain time, when we host FC Dallas at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Excitement has been building all week, and the fans are hungry, but what are we likely to see on Saturday? My prediction is a slight edge for Real, I’ll say 2-1, and I’ll tell you why.
First off, Dallas looks like a team that might start very slow this season. A new coach, a new formation, a backup keeper between the posts (Sala still has a few weeks on his suspension for his little punching fit during last season’s playoff loss to the Rapids) … I think it’s just too much to expect them to come out of the gate strong. Real has some new players, but the organization itself is much more stable. New Dallas coach Steve Morrow and his 4-2-3-1 formation are going to need some time to settle in, and I expect the quick front lines of Real to split the midfield well.
Look for Jeff Cunningham (wearing his ridiculous #90 … what is he, a linebacker?) and Freddy Adu to come out kicking. So much emphasis has been placed on early success this season for Real - they all feel this game needs to be won to start things off right. This is also the first time Real has had a chance to open their season at home, and the support will be out in force. Let’s start it off right, get a good win, and start paving the way to the franchise’s first ever playoff bid.
