Our stadium survives
By: Ian Rose | April 9th, 2007Well, it looks like another disaster has been averted in the obstacle course that is the effort to keep an MLS franchise in Utah. A citizen’s group called “Get Real Utah” has been trying to get a measure onto the state ballot to block public funding for Real’s new stadium in Sandy. However, it looks like they are a long way from the necessary 92,000 signatures needed to do so, and today is the deadline for filing of new measures. Aside from my personal views on this issue, which should be obvious (I want the team = I want the stadium = I want the funding), this is a perfect example of democracy in action. If a decently well-publicized, if admittedly poorly-run, campaign can’t get less than 100,000 signatures statewide on an issue, it doesn’t deserve to even go to the people for a decision. As much as I want that stadium built and this team supported, I would gladly bow to the voters of Utah if they decided that was not what they wanted for their tax dollars, but clearly, the majority of Utahans don’t feel strongly enough about it to sign a piece of paper. I wish I could say this meant that the majority of Utahans support Real, but I know that’s not yet true. For now, it looks like the plans will go ahead and we can look forward to getting out of RES and into a stadium of our own.

“Get Real Utah”? Probably a gang of mormons who aren’t allowed to watch soccer without fearing the back of God’s hand.

Well, I’m a big fan of the beautiful game but not really a fan of public funding for the stadium. I’m also not sufficiently riled up about it to sign the petition. I’m glad we’ve got the stadium though, and am looking forward to seeing RSL play in it.
Oh and Sam, we mormons don’t have any problems watching (or playing) soccer. ;^)
