Kyle Brown - our little secret is out
By: Ian Rose | April 3rd, 2007He might just have been the deal of the off-season, in terms of bang for your buck. When RSL traded a supplemental draft pick to the New England Revolution for Kyle Brown, he thought it was because the Revs were so disappointed in his reserve team play, but the transfer had been in the works in Salt Lake for some time. RSL had actually wanted to draft Brown, but New England beat them to it. After getting only two starts for the team, covering for Clint Dempsey while he was out for the World Cup, he was relegated to the reserve squad (quite possibly the worst reserve team in the history of the MLS, in fact). So, what’s so great about Brown?
Well, aside from the coolness factor of an all-Brown scoring drive (Kyle to Chris for the GOAL!), he may be the most athletic member of the RSL squad. That’s right, the side featuring Freddy Adu and Mehdi Ballouchy. Brown wowed RSL coaches by clocking the second-fastest 40m dash time on the team and the best scores for both the vertical jump and agility course at this year’s training camp.
His inconsistency at New England is an issue, and there’s no promises that he’ll be any better here. But, it may have been that the Revs just didn’t have a place for him. Since he’s willing (and very able) to play both midfielder and forward, he will certainly compete for a starting place, and at the very least is a versatile sub, which should get him a fair number of minutes even in matches he doesn’t start. That throw-away draft pick deal might just be one piece of the playoff puzzle for Real that was missing last year.
