Jeff tops first-week scorers … can he stay there?

By: Ian Rose | April 12th, 2007

Last year’s Golden Boot winner, Jeff Cunningham (and his aforementioned ridiculous jersey number 90) is once again at the top of the scoring sheet, being the only MLS player to score two goals in the first week’s matches and earning MLS Player of the Week honors. It was good for the team I think, to take some of the pre-season hype away from Freddy Adu and put it back on someone who has actually already produced for the team. It will be interesting to see how he holds up - I’m not expecting two goals a game (but I’m not complaining either) - but I think he can certainly stay in the top five scorers in the league all season, unless Freddy gets hot and starts getting more of the chances. Either way, good job Jeff. I’ll be back later with a short preview of the Columbus Crew match tonight.

Every time I see Cunningham play I am not impressed and then he somehow manages to score. Not sure how he does it really.

Jeff Cunningham is not only magic, he’s a player who, for reasons like running to kiss a giant picture of himself after scoring and for saying all kinds of silly crap, should be relentlessly promoted by MLS. He’s colorful and that’s good. It helps he scores a lot too.

In semi-related news, I just posted a Crew/RSL preview on my corner of this sprawling site. Hope we get a chance to compare notes before the event. Here’s my contribution.
