If The MLS Was Like Other Soccer Leagues Around The World, RSL Would Be Relegated

By: Wiz | August 23rd, 2007

Should we celebrate our differences or should we try and conform to the rest of the soccer world? We Americans like to march to our own drum. While we have adopted some of the traditions of the European leagues, transfer windows, friendlies, midseason tournaments to name a few, we haven’t adopted the bottom of the table relegation system…yet. For this I am extreemly grateful. Right now I don’t know where RSL would find itself. Would we even be in the USL’s top division, the PDL or would we be playing the college teams? Can you imagine trying to sell an MLS franchise to someone and part of the sales pitch states that if you don’t perform you get kicked out of the league and have to win in the lower divisions before you are allowed back into the MLS. How many investors would go for that? Would it solve the problem of supporting a consistent bottom feeder? The team/management would work furiously to stay up, investing money on talent on and off the pitch to keep their investment going. There are a lot of reasons, variables as to why this isn’t part of our system but given enough time and with more talent coming over we might see it happen in our lifetime…hopefully RSL will straighten it out by then and we can be more focused on winning the league than on staying in it.
RSL travels to LA this week for a weekend game with Chivas USA. Do you remember how that game went last time? You have probably forgotten or tried to push from your mind as I have. I am predicting another loss however. I dislike Chivas so much that it is hard for me to say that but hey, what precedent do we have for hope this season? Maybe the Argentines aren’t accustomed to losing yet and can infuse the team with some winning attitude.

You do realize that according to your suck-meter, LA and maybe Toronto would be relegated as well.

LA certainly deserves it! At least Toronto has an excuse. RSL has neither an excuse or it seems a remedy.
