Goalkeeper controversy in Salt Lake?

By: Ian Rose | April 24th, 2007

After his awful start against Chivas USA, MLS veteran Nick Rimando, once traded away, then recalled to RSL before the season began, is on a seat nearly as hot as his coach’s. Chris Seitz is the future of Real between the posts, but considering that Seitz has registered the only win since the season opener, and looking at the really poor decision-making from Rimando this weekend, there is certainly room to wonder if the future might just arrive in the next few weeks. I don’t think Chris will get the nod on Monday, but if Rimando puts in another sloppy start, it might just cost him his starting position.

Then again, there IS always Kasey Keller. That looks like more of a deal if Rimando stays in his current form. I still don’t think we can afford him, but we might stretch a bit more to try.

    Ian,
I don’t know how we can’t afford Kasey Keller. Both the short term and long term benefits far outweigh the cost.

Pat – I hope you’re right. I think the RSL front office took that off the table last week, but might put it firmly back on if Rimando continues playing like he doesn’t have 100+ MLS games under his belt.

    Ian and Pat,
Nick is absolutely horrid! Put the rookie in and keep Eddie Pope in front of him and he’ll be alright. I must say there are some other areas I would rather spend money. Right back has me wondering why we let Novack go? Stewart seems more comfortable in the center back role. Kline-who many like, does nothing for me. He shows no touch with his left foot and never makes a diagonal run into the area–always away from the post! Andy Williams who has a calmning effect on the team and serves Cunningham better than anyone on the team is now out and wasn’t even starting! Money needs to go for a scorer and or a solid attacking right back.

Well Wiz, it looks like the rookie is going to start on Monday. I do think it will help.

I can’t help but think that playing behind Kasey Keller for a year or two, then being coached by him would turn Chris Seitz from a really good prospect into a truly great goal keeper. I just hope the RSL front office will pony up and make it happen.

A nighmare in goal, he was directly responsible for the goals.
