Findley Rocks the House in RSL Win over Crew!
By: Rocky Cole | April 3rd, 2009
Robbie Findley rocked Rio Tinto Stadium in the first half of the game, scoring two unassisted goals, the second one basically walked into an open net, where the biggest defensive threat would have been tripping over his own shoe laces. In the second half he got his “hat trick” with an impressive header.
Honestly, I felt bad for the Columbus keeper, Will Hesmer, on the second goal when he made a bad clearing kick (as a former keeper – been there done that) directly into Findley which rebounded past the Hesmer. Findley ran onto the ball unopposed and that was it. As if Findley’s two first half goals weren’t enough, he put a fantastic header into the net in the second half. Add to that Beckerman’s score, off a nice Mathis corner and Columbus was done.
The night before this game, it was Josie Altadore’s night to score three goals in the U.S. Mens National Team’s qualifier with Trinidad and Tobago. Columbus’ Frankie Heyduk cheered on Altidore as an MNT team mate, but tonight, Heyduk watched from the Columbus bench as Findley mirrored Altadore’s total. It did not seem like Heyduk was as thrilled with Findley’s accomplishment as he was with Altidore’s the day before. Go figure.
The first ‘hat trick” in Real Salt Lake’s history, for you trivia buffs.
Lots of empty seats in Rio Tinto tonight, but the weather was cold, damp and windy, and it was a Thursday, after all. Okay, I’ll have to give the fans that stayed home a pass on this one, but with a pair of long-johns and an RSL scarf, would it have really been that bad?
Travis has a fantastic game summary here, that includes highlights. I may watch it again and again and again!

Well done to Robbie and RSL. I always liked Findley. The trade of he and Nathan Sturgis for Chris Klein never made sense to me, even though Chris Klein became one of my favorite Galaxy players.
I had a feelin whoever played you after we did was in for a thrashing.

This match is a prime example of why the MLS is garbage. None of those goals were due to skill or football intelligence. They were because of either bad keeping or bad defense, especially in the case of the Crew goal. What kind of positioning is that?

I can’t argue with Enreego about Findley’s second goal, and maybe his first, but Findley’s header and Beckerman’s head off Mathis cross were solid shots. MLS has some more development, especially with the best American players on teams overseas, but you have to start somewhere. I’m just happy to have a team to get behind and support.
