Finally, right? … A look back at the NY draw
By: Ian Rose | May 7th, 2007First off, I apologize for the bad “Hello, my name is” music, but as long as YouTube exists, before Bob’s imminent lawsuit bankrupts Google (leading to paid blogger positions and a Golden statue for the predictor league winners), I will utilize this important internet tool to show off Chris Brown’s fantastic equalizing goal against New York this past weekend:
It’s the first one, though the rest are pretty too.
Overall, we have to be thrilled with this result. Not only did we take on a Red Bull team that hadn’t allowed a single goal or lost a single game – we were coming off of two ugly losses. Nothing like this could have been expected – a point and THREE goals. Where the combined forces of Columbus, Dallas, Houston, and, well, Dallas again failed to score even once, we scored three times, only one of which was a penalty. Of course, we also allowed three goals. The defense continued to struggle but the midfield, weakened by the fact that one of our best midfielders had a tie on and was deciding substitutions, was surprisingly quick and responsive. I frankly expected a loss here, and wouldn’t have complained about a relatively close loss – but the draw we achieved, regardless of the penalty call, was gutsy. And gutsy is what you need to be when you’re at the bottom of the league table. You need to be willing to fight for a draw when your form says you deserve a loss, even when it comes to extra time and it looks hopeless. Chris Brown’s goal was lovely, as was Klein’s. If RSL didn’t have one of the most suspect defenses in the league, this could have been a win, which would have been one for the ages. The strikers did their jobs, and the whole team played with a lot of heart, which again, is what you need to do when you’re not quite good enough to win easily.
