Final scrimmages in Argentina

By: Fitz | March 12th, 2008

Some news to report out of RSL’s final two scrimmages of Argentine camp as I continue to pretend that a tie with Cuba never happened:

RSL 2, ROSARIO CENTRAL 2

This score is courtesy of RSL’s new official blog. Imagine that — a sports team using a staff member to write constant updates on the team so fans can check out what’s going on (or at least what’s going on through red, gold and blue glasses, but hey, that’s their job). I’m torn between congratulating RSL for doing the right thing, and asking them why the hell it took so long to do the bloody obvious. It’s not like all the league’s money is tied up in a reasonable salary cap or anything.

Kyle Beckerman and Nat Borchers scored. That’s Borchers’ second goal of the trip. Even without the goal, the trip has been a success for Beckerman, considering all RSL wanted was for him to play in one of the scrimmages. He’s played in two.

BACK IN THE USA

The blog also is asking fans to welcome the boys home from Argentina at 11:10 a.m. Thursday.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the crowd won’t be a mob, so if I’m RSL, I use this opportunity to have coach Jason Kreis meet with fans and answer a few questions about training camp. He doesn’t have to give away national security codes or anything, just say how Beckerman looked coming off his foot injury and various other harmless nuggets that would still enlighten fans.

RSL (MOSTLY RESERVES) 2, CENTRAL CORDOBA 0

Kreis played central back Jamison Olave for 30 minutes and midfielder Matias Cordoba for 42 out of the 60. The Olave decision is easy to read. He didn’t arrive until the start of this camp and Kreis wants him acclimated to game speed as much as possible.

As for Cordoba, the RSL brass hasn’t been happy with him, so maybe they’re trying to play him into shape. Or maybe they’re just giving him every opportunity to prove he’s worth their expectations (and money and a roster spot).

Andy Williams (unassisted) and Yura Movsisyan scored three minutes apart.

Central is a third division team.

The official Web site has more details.

LET’S HAVE THOSE COMMENTS

Discuss topics that include but are not limited to …

1. Your thoughts on tying Cuba. (Nope. Repeating it over and over hasn’t numbed the feeling.) All three RSL guys started. Sturgis (defense) and Findley (outside mid) played positions they won’t fill with RSL. Unless …

1a. Could RSL play Findley at outside mid — giving us, say, Yura and The Doctor up front and Findley as another attacking option wide?

2. Your general thoughts on the team now that there are less than three weeks before opening kickoff.

3. Shouldn’t there be a video at the end of this post?

WHY YES, THERE SHOULD …

With RSL leaving Argentina, let’s celebrate South America with a cool video from Brazilian band Cansei De Ser Sexy. This won the award for Best Video Ever Made Involving Rabbits. The song is “Alcohol,” and it produced one of the more unintentionally funny moments I’ve seen at a concert …

Lovefoxxx, the lead singer: “What’s your favorite alcohol?”
Pause to listen to the fan’s answer.
Lovefoxxx: “Shampoo?”

I love CSS and I’m shocked by the Findley news. Is this his first time in the midfield? How did he do? I won’t be able to watch these games until the weekend so I’m dying to know.

Melissa –> He started at outside mid and had one chance on a breakaway but hit it at the keeper. I didn’t see the whole game so I can’t speak to his overall play. Maybe I’ll watch the whole thing tonight on ESPN360 and follow up.
And yes, CSS can be very entertaining. Catchy as hell.

Personally, as far as rabbit videos? I prefer Pink’s “Just Like a Pill.” But maybe that’s just me.

Findley did not look good the first half when he was playing out wide. His scoring chance came in the second half when they moved him back up front.
