Cunningham out, Eskandarian in

By: Ian Rose | May 22nd, 2007

Well, enough was apparently enough. In a gutsy, and I think correct, move, Coach Kreis has unloaded defending Golden Boot holder Jeff Cunningham and picked up Alecko Eskandarian. Jeff has been largely uneffective since an opening-match 2-goal performance that had RSL fans expecting a lot. In the six matches since, he has scored only once, and that was a penalty. He has missed pass after pass, and looked really anemic for the last month. I think this is a wise move. Eskandarian is certainly not the prolific scorer that Cunningham was, and he’s had injury problems, but I think he can fit in here. More importantly, by unloading Cunningham, we open up a heap of salary cap space. Here, Sheva, Sheva, Sheva.

This is an interesting one. Cunningham is a proven goal scorer but reportedly hasn’t gotten along with Kreis. Eskandarian is good when he is healthy, which is almost never. That cap space might make Real the winner but they need to use it well instead of signing another Clint Mathis.

I’ll bow to your opinion on Cunningham, but would advise a bit of caution with Eskandarian; he doesn’t sound too pleased about the move. On the other hand, under a brighter interpretation, it could be that he’s mad at Toronto, but not RSL. Maybe it won’t carry over?

I don’t have a problem with Jeff leaving–he didn’t do much in the way of team play ie. running at defenders hustling back onsides, not very good in the air and certainly not great with his back to the goal. He had a great year last year and loved his celebrations. We need that creative scorer who doesn’t need a lot of set up to make it happen. On another note, I heard Jason say last night that he wasn’t to sure about Attiba either and that the next game might determine the outcome of Attiba Harris. Wow! Jason is cleaning house! Good, now spend the money wisely! Sheva? That would be a dream come true!
