Captain Courageous Comes Through!
By: Rocky Cole | March 14th, 2009
On March 11th, Real Salt Lake’s captain, Kyle Beckerman showed some offensive flair late in the game against the Charleston Battery of the USL, scoring the game winning goal after a Yura Movsisyan take away deep in the Battery’s territory. Previously, RSL’s Clint Mathis had scored off a free kick, as had the Battery’s Ian Fuller.
RSL started some of the players that are competing for positions for the 2009 campaign, but at the 68th minute, with the game tied, Coach Jason Kreis decided the time was right to bring in six first-team players. This late game infusion of talent included Beckerman, and RSL dominated offensive play from that point on.
With the win over the Charleston Battery, RSL will now face Toronto FC in what is effectively the final of the Carolina Challenge Cup on Saturday, 14 March, at 3:00 P.M. Mountain Time. FC Toronto and Real Salt Lake both have earned six points in the tournament, but Real leads on goal differential by a 4+ to 2+ margin. Therefore, to win the tournament and bring the trophy back to Utah, RSL just needs to tie Toronto. That said, the way that RSL has played during pre-season, winning with a tie just doesn’t seem to be the way Jason Kreis and his players will want to win. Sure, RSL will play some guys that are battling for a spot – that’s a given – but my guess is that RSL will play to win, and that is a decidedly good thing.
