A Week to Rebuild
By: Ian Rose | April 24th, 2007Well, Real are back in training, with a long week to ponder exactly what went wrong in the trainwreck that was this past weekend’s 4-0 loss to Chivas USA. Losers of 4-0 matches are often quoted as saying that scoreline was harsh on them, that the run of play is not reflected in such a one-sided score. Not this time. If the scoreline was fair, it would be at least 5-0, probably 6. This was an awful performance, far below the quality of the players and the organization. Freddy Adu was lost, Jeff Cunningham was selfish and impotent, and Nick Rimando was hapless. On the bright side, we won’t see a similar performance this weekend … since Real doesn’t play until Monday. The heat of John Ellinger’s seat has been a topic of much discussion in the Real corners of the blogosphere, but I don’t think firing is quite in order just yet. Good coaches have terrible games. Good coaches take advantage of long weeks off before rivalry matches to get over terrible games. (I hope you’re listening somewhere to this last part, John). Good coaches who don’t react well to terrible games, especially when their next game is against a rival, tend to get fired a lot. This is an important game for the whole team, but may just be the most important game of Ellinger’s career, because as hot as that seat is now, John, lose badly to the CRapids, and things will get uncomfortably warm.
