A loss to Dallas, well-deserved

By: Ian Rose | May 20th, 2007

Well, so much for that undefeated record under Coach Kreis. I’m not entirely sure two games ever makes a streak anyway, and you could have just as easily called it a winless streak, since both previous games under Kreis were draws. RSL went down to FC Dallas tonight, 2-1. I have to say, it’s one of those games where the scoreline tells the story. RSL had really very little offense through three-quarters of this match, and Dallas put on a nice show in that department. Both goals, first an unassisted strike from Arturo Alvarez at 26′ and then a beautiful top-shelf boot from Chris Gbandi at 82′, were great goals. We deserved to lose this match. Our defense continues to leave holes that Victoria Beckham could score through, not to mention David, and our offense is really lacking spark. There were some bright points, as there almost always are. Freddy Adu finally got his first goal of the season, though it was a penalty. He only got a chance at it because Jeff Cunningham, who had a totally unconvincing night, was already on the bench when Atiba Harris got his shirt tugged and drew the PK. Still, a goal’s a goal and I hope it will infuse a bit more confidence into Freddy. He’s looking better the past few games and I still think he could have a really good season if he gets hot. Danny Torres, while still hardly perfect, marked and defended noticeably better than he has in the past, so he might not be a lost cause after all. In much less positive news, we saw Carey Talley taken off the pitch at 10′ in, with a lower leg contusion. If he can’t get healthy, that swiss-cheese defense is only going to look worse. I hate to say it, but once again, this is a game we deserved to lose, and just about by this margin.

I am quite grateful to your team for losing, and especially by this margin. My first perfect game in a couple of weeks in the Predictor League!! :-)

That’s what we’re here for, Laurie. I assume that the check is in the mail.

There was absolutely zero spark on the offensive side. Attiba Harris looked like the only one willing to work up front. Medhi was completely out of form. Ricchetti owned him last night. Medhi was just losing possesion or sending long balls to Dallas’ defenders. It is time to get a real attack going. I’m even in favor of letting Medhi sit and let Andy run the show for awhile. Something has to give we look terrible!!! and with as much time off we should have looked a lot sharper.

Agreed, Wiz. That was a nasty one. There are so many ways we need to improve. I think the best thing I can say is that Nick Rimando was only beaten by two of the best goals Dallas has had so far this season, especially the second one - that was pretty. Still, the offense was weak and the defense was shaky … we might be waiting a while for that first win.
